Paul Adams leads the Lab's Biosciences Area, which includes the Biological Systems and Engineering, Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology, and Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging divisions, as well as the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI). His research focuses on the development of new algorithms and methods for structural biology, structural studies of macromolecules, and the development of cellulosic biofuels as part of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI). He is an adjunct professor of bioengineering at UC Berkeley.

William Collins leads the Earth and Environmental Sciences Area, including its Climate and Ecosystem Sciences and Energy Geosciences divisions, as well as the Carbon Negative Initiative. His research concerns the interactions among sunlight, heat, the coupled climate system, and global environmental change. He is a professor in residence in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, and a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society.

Jonathan Carter leads the Lab's Computing Sciences Area, including its Scientific Data and Applied Mathematics and Computational Research divisions, and two DOE national user facilities: the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). He has held leadership roles within the DOE complex, most notably related to the Exascale Computing Project and Quantum Information Science. Previously as a scientific staff member at IBM Research, he conducted research and development on computational chemistry methods for application to technology challenges.

Jeff Neaton leads the Lab's Energy Sciences Area, including the Chemical Sciences and Materials Sciences divisions, as well as two Basic Energy Sciences-sponsored national scientific user facilities, the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and the Molecular Foundry. His research centers on understanding and design of novel condensed phases and their properties with theoretical and computational approaches. He is a senior faculty scientist at Berkeley Lab, a fellow of the American Physical Society, and a professor of physics at UC Berkeley.

Mary Ann Piette leads the Lab’s Energy Technologies Area, which includes the Building Technology & Urban Systems (BTUS), Energy Analysis & Environmental Impacts, and Energy Storage & Distributed Resources divisions. Before her appointment, Piette was BTUS division director. In her 35-plus year career at Berkeley Lab, where she is a Senior Scientist, she has led a robust research portfolio, including new building technologies, modeling and analysis; commercial and residential building systems integration; grid interactive communications and integration with electric vehicles, storage and photovoltaics.

Natalie Roe leads the Lab's Physical Sciences Area, including its Physics, Nuclear Science, Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics, and Engineering divisions. She has developed advanced instrumentation for her research in particle physics, and more recently for cosmology experiments designed to study dark energy and the early universe.
