Nebraska, with its rich agricultural history and educated workforce, is a leader in bioproducts research and manufacturing. One of its leading research firms, Bluestem Biosciences, has partnered with the Agile BioFoundry (ABF) — a Berkeley Lab-led consortium of national laboratories advancing the industrial biomanufacturing of fuels and chemicals — to create an anaerobic platform that can unlock price-competitive, bio-based commodity chemicals. By replacing products normally derived from offshore petroleum, bio-based chemicals can increase domestic supply chain security, provide an edge to U.S. manufacturing, and revitalize the heartland.
