Berkeley Lab led the construction of GRETA, the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array. Researchers can use the state-of-the-art detector to explore how stars form heavy elements, test the limits of the atomic nucleus, and probe hundreds of new isotopes. Once installed in 2026, GRETA will be the flagship detector at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University. FRIB is a unique scientific facility and economic driver for the region, having spent and obligated over $2 billion in procurements and labor since 2011, with more than $1.6 billion in Michigan.
