The development of alternative jet fuels made from local feedstocks such as corn, soybeans, waste oils, and other fats has the potential to create a market opportunity for Kentucky farmers and the state’s growing aviation sector. These jet fuel alternatives are designed to be “drop-in” replacements, meaning they can be used in existing aircraft and airport infrastructure without engine modifications. Berkeley Lab is home to the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), a Department of Energy Bioenergy Research Center, where scientists are advancing these fuels’ efficiency and affordability.

Anthro Energy, a next-generation battery company, is investing in Louisville with the construction of a $42 million advanced electrolyte manufacturing facility for lithium-ion batteries. The plant will create 110 new full time jobs and almost 400 construction jobs. The startup graduated from Berkeley Lab’s science entrepreneur fellowship program, Cyclotron Road, in 2021, concentrating on developing flexible, safe, and high-performing lithium-ion batteries for consumer products. The project will further the U.S.’s goal toward energy independence.
