Berkeley Lab’s Geothermal Systems Program is focused on developing innovative technologies that can identify and characterize conventional and hidden natural hydrothermal systems; and characterizing, developing, and sustaining enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) through the use of coupled process models, microearthquake monitoring, and laboratory studies. The research could help make EGS energy a cheaper source of round-the-clock electricity.

Berkeley Lab’s team of synthetic biologists, biochemists, and process engineers collaborate with academic groups and companies to scale innovative bio-based solutions and advance them to market readiness. By harnessing the power of microbes, these collaborations are changing what’s possible in fuels, therapeutics, food, personal care, and high-performance materials — and powering the $4 trillion biomanufacturing industry.
