Somorjai
The American Chemical Society announced yesterday it will bestow its highest honor, the Priestley Medal, on Gabor A. Somorjai, Berkeley Lab scientist and UC Berkeley professor of chemistry, "for extraordinarily creative and original contributions to surface science and catalysis." The annual award, to be presented at the spring 2008 ACS national meeting, recognizes distinguished service to the field of chemistry. Previous Berkeley lab winners of the Priestley are Darleane Hoffman (2000) George Pimentel (1989) and Glenn Seaborg (1979). Full story.

King

Chris King, a Professional Staff Member of the House of Representatives Committee on Science Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, visited the Lab Monday to address the annual meeting of the National User Facility Organization. While here he toured the ALS with Roger Falcone and the Molecular Foundry with Paul Alivisatos. He also had discussions about energy research with Acting EETD director, Bill Fisk, and Lab Director Steve Chu. King's portfolio of legislative issues includes energy research and DOE civilian science programs.

Airline Sensor Could Pinpoint Germs

A new system that uses a computer program and sensors could identify passengers responsible for the release of chemical agents in a terrorist attack or the unintentional release of germs or a virus, such as the tuberculosis-infected man who recently flew on international flights. The system, devised by Qingyan Chen and his doctoral student, Tengfei Zhang, both of Purdue University, traces hazardous airborne materials back to the source and can identify the location plus or minus one seat. "Everyone else has tried many ways to solve the problem and he actually figured out a way to keep it stable," said Ashok Gadgil, senior staff Scientist in EETD at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. ANNOUNCEMENTS

GLBTF Club Celebrates
Gay Pride Month

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Friends (GLBTF) club at Berkeley Lab has once again displayed the rainbow flag on the fence near building 65. The flag hangs every year in June in celebration of Gay Pride Month and serves to reiterate the importance of diversity and acceptance. The Employee Activities Association and the GLBTF club encourage all employees to celebrate the broad spectrum of diversity that exists at Berkeley Lab. The GLBTF club invites all laboratory employees to join them in the celebration by attending the GLBTF Diversity Lunch on June 15 in Perseverance Hall from 11:30 to 1 p.m.

Waterworld, Discovery
Kingdom Tickets for Sale

An Employee Activities Association representative will be selling Discovery Kingdom and Waterworld tickets tomorrow at the cafeteria from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $25 each for Discovery Kingdom and $17 each for Waterworld. Only checks and money orders will be accepted. Those with questions should contact eaacoordinator@lbl.gov.
