Team Integrates Silicon
Circuit With Nanotubes

Bokor

The discovery of carbon nanotubes heralded a new era of scientific discovery that included the promise of ultra-sensitive bomb detectors and super-fast computer memory chips. But finding a way to incorporate nanomaterials into a working nanoelectronic system has been a frustratingly elusive achievement — until now. In an important milestone in the fields of nanosciences and nanoengineering, a team of UC Berkeley and Stanford researchers, including Lab materials scientist Jeff Bokor, have created the first working, integrated silicon circuit that successfully incorporates carbon nanotubes in its design. Go here to read Sarah Yang’s UC Berkeley press release.

COMPUTER UPDATE

Main Server Down
On Friday Evening

The Lab's main web server, www.lbl.gov, will be down for urgent hardware maintenance on Friday between 6 and and 10 p.m. This will affect the Lab's main website and web email (www.lbl.gov/mail). There will be two short 15-minute intervals where the server will not be available, one at the start of maintenance between 6 and 6:15 p.m. and another when the maintenance work is completed, sometime between 8 and 10 p.m. For questions, contact the Help Desk at 486-HELP or visit their website.

Jan. 14 Town Hall Meeting
Takes Place in Bldg. 937

The third in a series of conversations between Lab employees and senior management will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, from noon to 1 p.m., in Building 937-649. Lab Director Charles Shank and Deputy Director for Operations Sally Benson will be on hand to bring people up-to-date on current issues as well as answer questions from the audience. Attendees are invited to bring brown bag lunches during the one-hour discussion.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Smoking Rules for
UC, Government Buildings

A new law that took affect on Jan. 1 — Assembly Bill 846 — requires that smokers do their puffing at least 20 feet from the door or working window of any University of California or government building, including those at the Lab. Formerly, smokers had to maintain a distance of five feet from a building’s entrance. The law was created to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke.

SAFETY NOTES

Three-Month Safety
Campaign Launches

In an effort to increase awareness about accident prevention, “Today at Berkeley Lab” will feature over the next three months occasional safety tips on hand injuries, ergonomic issues, trips and falls, and lifting. For example: carrying boxes up or down stairs can obstruct an employee's view, as illustrated in the photo above, causing them to trip or fall. It is safer to use an elevator or hold the box to the side so that vision is not obstructed.
