Lab Post-Doc Receives
Rett Syndrome Grant

Hisano

Mizue Hisano, a post-doctoral researcher with Life Scientist Terumi Kohwi-Shigematsu at Berkeley Lab, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Rett Syndrome Research Foundation as one of 15 projects designed to accelerate treatments and a cure for Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder diagnosed almost exclusively in girls. Hisano's project is entitled Characterization of MeCP2-target genes in RTT. Full story. To read a summary of Hisano's project, go here.

WORLD OF SCIENCE

High-End Computing
Supported In Budgets

The White House is instructing executive-branch heads to give priority to supercomputing and cyberinfrastructure research and development over other IT-related R&D initiatives as they prepare their budgets for fiscal year 2006. A memo from Office of Science and Technology Policy director John Marburger III and OMB director Joshua Bolten says supercomputing and cyberinfrastructure R&D "should be given higher relative priority due to the potential of each in further progress across a broad range of scientific and technological applications." Full story.

With a Night of Dancing

The Lab's Latino and Native-American Association (LANA) and Berkeley Lab Dance Club are hosting a first-ever evening of dancing. Employees can cut the rug in the Cafeteria on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 7 to 11 p.m. The cost is $15 per person and $25 for couples. Tickets are on sale between noon and 1 p.m. in the cafeteria through Sept. 8. A live band and DJ will provide salsa, rock and pop tunes. Hor d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

SAFETY NOTES

Input From Staff Leads
To Several Safety Fixes at Lab

Since launching two web sites in May that invited employee input on safety, the Environment, Health and Safety Division has received several submissions that resulted in swift action. Examples include removal of a tree branch that was blocking a mirror at the Grizzly Gate and sweeping away pine cones from paved surfaces that were presenting a tripping hazard.   EH&S is also arranging for the installation of carbon filters in air intake openings in buildings where diesel exhaust fumes from Lab buses can enter. Another suggestion urged all bicyclists to wear helmets, a safety practice EH&S endorses. Have a safety concern? Go here. A suggestion? Go here. For questions, call x5514.
