What are Structural Films?

Films or layers that are applied to substrates are frequently used for decorative, barrier, and electronic applications. However, the availability of photolithography used by the microelectronics industry has lead to micron-scale mechanical components made from thin films. The class structural materials which are manufactured as films are referred to as "structural films."

Where are structural films used?

Structural films are the basis of mechanical components that are often integrated with electronic circuitry.  In the U.S. these integrated devices are

referred to as microelectromechnical systems (MEMS).  MEMS are used in a wide variety of transducers and consumer products including pressure transducers, inertial sensors, and ink jet cartridge nozzles.
