Welcome to the Berkeley West Biocenter

The Berkeley West Biocenter is located at 717 Potter Street (LBNL Bldg 977) in Aquatic Park Center. Please take the time to skim this entire website. Please address any concerns or suggestions about the operations of your lab at this location to your Point of Contact (POC). They will continue monthly to discuss and improve the way we work together at our new location.

Note: phone numbers in this document have a “510” area code unless otherwise specified. When calling from a LBNL phone, you may omit the 486 or 495 prefix.

Contact the Building Manager with any concerns:

1. SECURITY AND PERSONAL SAFETY

Emergency number: 9-911

Fire extinguisher/emergency exit
Please familiarize yourself with the locations of the fire extinguishers and emergency exits in the building.

Security concerns

LBNL Security
The LBNL security desk in the lobby is staffed from 7 am to 7 pm and can be reached at 486-5099. The desk is attended by security guards from Landmark Protection Corporate Security, a security company contracted by LBNL. Note that the guard at the smaller security desk only provides security services to Bayer Pharmaceutical.

Exterior Patrols/Escorts
From 6 pm to 6 am two Landlord security officers patrol the Aquatic Park Center, one by car that roves the parking lot and another who walks the premises and monitors the perimeter of the building. Call the mobile patrol (517-3962) or foot patrol (367-3392) to escort you to your car or bike parked on site (outdoors/garage). Note that these officers secure the outside of the building only, not the interior space. They do not have keys to the Biocenter.

LBNL main security escorts
You may request an escort to transport you to the Ashby BART station or to the LBNL or UCB campus. Please contact the LBNL Blackberry gate at 486-4050. This service is available between 7:30 pm – 5 am. Please allow some time for a security guard to come down to your location. Please coordinate your need for an escort with your colleagues, and consider sharing a ride with them.

Alarmed emergency exit doors
Please note that the following exterior doors are emergency exits. Alarm will sound when opened. Use them only in case of emergencies.
Exterior door across from freight elevator
Exterior door in conference room 120
Exterior door in 1S (1st floor south/Bustamante Lab)
Exterior door in 2S

Furniture keys
Please see the Building Manager to obtain or arrange keys to your desk/lockable cabinets.

2. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY

The LBNL EH&S Liaison is Jack Salazar.

Electrical heaters
Electrical space heaters are NOT allowed in the building. Please remove them immediately.

3. BUILDING ACCESS
The exterior doors of the building are locked at all times. The inner suites doors to the lobby/atrium are locked between 7 pm and 7 am. Both LBNL and UCB occupants should use their LBNL ID proximity access card (a.k.a. prox card or card key) for access. Do not prop the exterior doors or the inner suite doors open at any time. An alarm will sound when propping these door open during off-hours. Note: new exterior doors are being installed in the lobby/atrium. If the current doors jam and you cannot open them during off-hours, please use the door at the northwest end of the building, next to the loading dock roll-up door.

To request card key access or office keys contact:
Tony Linard (LSD Approver), AMLinard@lbl.gov, 486-6149
Vangie Peterson (PBD/UCB Approver), ECPeterson@lbl.gov, 486-4348

Access for services and vendors
Any vendor or repair person that needs to come on-site needs to have an insurance certificate amendment in place with the landlord. BEFORE arranging any vendor or repair person to come on-site, check with the Building Manager if the necessary documents are in place. If you place a work- or purchase order via LBNL Procurement, the designated buyer should arrange for the certificate. Please refer questions to Maureen Cowger in Procurement, MKCowger@lbl.gov. Alternatively, contact the Building Manager.

Access for guests
Expected guests: Biocenter occupants need to call the security desk at 486-5099 with name, time expected, company name and host name of guest.
All guests (expected and unexpected) are required to sign in at the security desk upon arrival.

4. PARKING - Parking permit required
With a Wareham parking permit you may park in all non-designated parking spaces at Aquatic Park Center, outdoors and in the garage. Parking permits are available at the LBNL Security Desk. Visitors (either LBNL/UCB employees or others) may pick up a temporary parking permit at this desk. Alternatively, they may download this permit here, complete it and place this on their car dashboard. Regular visitors can obtain a permanent parking permit at the same desk. The Landlord will tow cars that are parked without parking permit (towing charges to be paid by owner).

Between 7 pm – 7 am (and weekends), you can only enter the garage via the man door located to the left of the 725 Potter Street entrance/lobby (the building opposite of 717). When this door is locked, it can be opened by entering a numerical security code on the keypad or contact the security guard.

The garage gate is closed weekdays from 7 pm – 7 am (and weekends). When exiting the garage by car during these hours, the gate will open automatically (please drive up slowly). Pedestrians/bikers can exit via a man door.

If you plan to park your car on site for over 48 hours (due to business trip, etc.), please inform the Building Manager and give the information below. If you fail to inform him, your car may be towed by the Landlord (towing charges to be paid by owner).

Bicycle parking
Bike racks are located in the garage on the first floor. In addition, 12 bike lockers are located at the north-east corner of the Biocenter building. Six lockers each have been assigned to LSD and PBD. LSD contact is Kat Wentworth.

No bikes are allowed inside the building. Bikes parked outside the designated areas (not parked in racks or in lockers) will be removed.

5. SHUTTLES and OTHER TRANSPORTATION

Shuttle routes/schedules

LBNL NEW shuttle route
LBNL Shuttle Information: 486-4165
Route/schedule per June 9, 2008 (subject to change):

The new schedule of the Lab shuttle van going to and from Potter St. and LBNL has a route that includes a stop at the Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) on Hollis St. As part of the changes, the Potter St. / JBEI van will no longer travel to Building 74. Passengers in that area should board a Blue bus at Stawberry Gate and get off at the Greek Theatre stop (Rimway and Gayley Rd.). Passengers must ask the Blue bus driver to radio the Potter St. / JBEI van driver to ensure a connection. Van riders can transfer to a Blue or Orange bus at the downtown BART Station stop to travel to the east side of campus or back up to The Hill. Again, passengers should have the van driver contact the Blue or Orange bus driver to alert them to the transfer. See a map of the new route: here, and for a schedule here. For more information, contact Tammy Brown TABrown@lbl.gov, 486-4758.
