Introductions and discussion of committee members’
responsibilities
Safety issues at Brookhaven
- Outdoor
lighting (ongoing concern)
- Dosimeter
records from BNL need to be sent to LBNL
- Any
questions regarding BNL safety can be directed to Kathie Hardy
NS Division safety committee issues
- Meeting
to continue to be held once per quarter @ 10am
- Important
for safety reps to educate group leaders
- Satellite
Accumulation Areas and lead bricks are biggest safety problem for NS
Division
- Also
some electrical problems
- Discussion
on importance of ISM Plan and Self-Assessment Program. Reminder that LBNL takes this VERY
seriously.
Self-Assessment inspections
·
Conducted last month
·
Some unlabeled chemicals were found (ongoing
problem to be discussed at a later date)
·
Remaining inspections will be conducted in
January and February
·
Building 70 to be done next
SRC Info (A. Macchiavelli)
- EHS 19
& 20 training courses (Handout of course outline)
- Some
issues about these courses
- Should
they be mandatory? Should they be
web-based? Could it be combined to
one course? Monday morning course
for supervisors?
- Hot
button issue in NS
- Lot
of resistance from people about attending this course
- We
need to stress the importance of these courses; many people take these
courses, meetings, and issues lightly
- LBNL
is legally responsible to make sure everyone at the Lab are informed of
these issues
- Some
of the terminology that is used turns people off or makes them not
interested, but these are terms that the Lab wants everyone to know.
SNO Project
·
List of injuries (Handout)
·
Extreme caution is necessary; we are still
working in dangerous environment
·
SNO Project policies and procedures (given to K.
Hardy)
·
Required by law to report ALL injuries even if
they seem small
·
‘Lost Time’ or ‘Loss of Man Hours’ is what is
important
·
Some injuries are ‘reportable’ and some are ‘recordable’
·
Report of injuries do not reflect well on us
Action Item: Get safety info for other experiment sites
Lead Bricks
- Moratorium
on all lead bricks used in or around accelerators
- This
lead cannot leave the Lab; it can be re-used but cannot go anywhere else
besides another DOE facility
- DO NOT
put them into recycle bins, hoppers, or transfer them to someone
else.
- Suggest
that we paint them a certain color to identify them and designate a
certain area to store them in
- Lead
is highly regulated in California, due to lead poisoning and such
- Let
Carole know if any groups have need or use for any lead
Accident at 88
- Foot
injured going up stairs to Hibay
- Was
proper footwear being worn? Closed
shoe may have prevented this injury
- Injury
turned out to be very serious (fracture, surgery, etc.)
- Is
there a formal regulation on footwear?
Not for the type of work this person normally does. Office/computer work – OK to wear
sandals and such
- Any
regulations about high heels? None
Action Item:
Locate a bigger meeting room, preferably in Building 50
