Heating Rates of Planar Ion Traps for Quantum Information

Laboratory Directed Research and Development

Harmut Haeffner, John Clarke

The main purpose of this project is to further our understanding of the mechanisms which lead to motional heating of trapped ions and to find materials which lead to small heating rates. Up to now the details of the heating mechanism are poorly understood.  We will design and manufacture high-performance planar ion traps with heating rates of less than 0.1 quantum / ms.
