Methods of Compliance

Methods to be used to ensure employees are not exposed to lead in excess of PEL.

Engineering Controls

Ventilation is effective in removing lead dust.

Shrouded tools provide exhaust ventilation at the point where the dust is generated.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters on vacuums are capable of capturing very small dust particles with a 99.97% efficiency

Respiratory Protection

Used when other types of controls are not sufficient to reduce lead exposure to below PEL.  Additional training is required to wear a respirator.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Used to keep lead dust off your clothes.

Housekeeping/Work Practices

Since exposure to lead can occur via ingestion and inhalation it is important to control the dust level so you don't breathe or eat it. Plan your job to avoid generating dust or fumes

  • use exhaust ventilation to capture dust/fumes whenever possible;
  • HEPA vacuum dust covered work surfaces; dry sweeping or blowing is prohibited; wet methods may be used;
  • do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics in areas where lead is present;
  • wash hands and face after lead work;

  • wear protective clothing to avoid getting dust on your clothes and then bringing it home to spouse and children.

When handling a small number of unwrapped lead bricks (<5):

Remember that the oxidized white deposits are lead containing. 

  • Do not carry bricks against your body as the lead oxide can rub/flake off.
  • Place bricks carefully, do not drop into place as this can generate dust.
  • HEPA Vacuum/Wash work surfaces that may contain lead dust.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after moving/positioning bricks.

Wrapped Brick

  • Wrapping bricks in tape is one way to reduce the oxidation and control dust release (contact John Heim at 486-5216 for more information on wrapping).
  • If moving/manipulating more than 5 unwrapped bricks, a written compliance plan is required because of the potential to exceed the OSHA Action Level.  Contact your EH&S Liaison or John Heim- JHeim@lbl.gov or x5216 for more information.
