Security and Access at Berkeley Lab

The Department of Energy has determined that its Office of Science laboratories will be operating for the foreseeable future under Security Condition (SECON) level 3. I want to assure you that all efforts are being made to preserve the open nature of our enterprise so we can fulfill our scientific mission with minimal constraint. At the same time, it is important to recognize the circumstances that have led to our vigilance and to conduct ourselves in an appropriately responsible and sensible manner.

During this period, the Department has asked that we be vigilant in minimizing site vulnerabilities. This includes ensuring that people on site have legitimate and documented reasons for being here. To that end, I am asking that each employee adhere to the following procedures:

  • Every employee must have a valid laboratory proximity badge and either wear it or produce it upon request. Badges can be obtained at the Site Access Office in Building 65A (siteaccess@lbl.gov or 486-4551). In Property Protection Areas (PPA), like the Hazardous Waste Handling Facility, wearing and displaying badges is required. Visitors to PPAs must be accompanied by a designated Lab escort. In facilities requiring cardkey access, be aware of those around you and do not permit entry to those without authorized clearance.
  • At the entrance gates, security personnel require employees to stop and provide positive identification through the display of a valid parking permit. Government vehicles will also be asked to stop, and drivers are required to show their badges. Visitors and guests who have been cleared by a sponsoring department via advance registration will receive a temporary parking permit at the Blackberry gate. To register visitors, use the site access web page at https://visitorpass.lbl.gov/public_html/login.jsp.
  • Visitors not on the gate access list will be required to show a valid photo ID at the Blackberry, Strawberry, and Grizzly gates. Personnel who ride our shuttle buses must have an LBNL Photo ID, UCB student or staff ID, DOE Standard Badge, or Office of Science Common Badge. Others must display evidence of a business need to enter the Lab. Employees with Lab ID may vouch for a visitor either on the bus or at the gate and must assume responsibility for that person while on site.
  • Visitors arriving at the site who are not cleared by any of the above methods will remain in the gate area while the visitor’s host is contacted. If the host cannot be reached, the Security Officer will then offer an escort to their destination.

Thanks for your patience and your cooperation.
