Construction Safety

All construction activities at LBNL must be conducted safely, in accordance with OSHA regulations, with appropriate measures taken to minimize the possibility of injury to individuals, or damage to the environment or property. Site inspections are made by LBNL’s safety inspector and/or fire inspector, and in situations where there is a reasonable possibility of serious physical harm, either the LBNL inspector or the subcontractor may temporarily stop work at the site until the problem is resolved.

A hard hat and other appropriate safety equipment, such as safety shoes, face shields, or safety harnesses, must be used as necessary. Safety requirements for ladders, scaffolding, work surfaces, and elevated work stations are described in the LBNL Health and Safety Manual (PUB-3000).

All operations causing sparks or producing open flames (including welding, flame cutting, or powder-actuated tools), as well as those posing other types of fire hazards (such as spray painting, excavations, and tar kettle work), require a fire permit, which is available from the Fire Department (ext. 6015).
