Drinking Water

The Berkeley Lab maintains a Drinking Water Program to ensure that the drinking water meets all Federal, State, and DOE guidelines as well as recognized good practice.

Drinking water that exceeds drinking water standards for bacteria, metals, organic chemicals etc. can cause a variety of health symptoms, ranging from discomfort and sickness, to death in extreme cases. Control measures at the Laboratory consist of testing and/or disinfection of new installations and repairs. Buildings are periodically tested for coliform bacteria, drinking fountains have undergone baseline sampling for copper and lead. In addition, backflow prevention devices are required where drinking water is connected to industrial or other non-potable water systems.
