Confined
Space accidents are a significant cause of death and injury
in the workplace. Hazards vary widely, with oxygen deficiency,
flammable and toxic gases or vapors being the most common
hazards. The Berkeley Lab maintains an active Confined Space
Program to ensure that entries are conducted in a safe manner
that is consistent with applicable regulations and recognized
good practices.
Confined spaces include, but are not limited to tanks, ducts, pipelines, sumps, sewers, trenches, vaults, and similar spaces not intended for continuous human occupancy. Before entering a confined space an entry permit is required. This permit requires that potential hazards be assessed before entry. All Berkeley Lab employees who enter confined spaces or who serve as the attendant during an entry are required to have completed EHS 275 – the Confined Space Entry Training Class.
Additional information about the LBL Confined Space Program
and Policy can be found in Pub 3000, Chapter 4.9.
This policy applies to all employees and subcontractors who
enter confined spaces at Berkeley Lab.
