In the Event of an Emergency ....
EMERGENCY RESPONSE GUIDE ... In the event of Fire, Medical Emergency
or Danger to Life, Health or the Environment:
- LBNL on and off site buildings
(from phones with 486 and 495 prefix) x7911
-- answered by the LBNL Fire Department dispatcher and is monitored
by the LBNL Security dispatch center at Blackberry Gate.
- All non-LBNL campus buildings
(642 and 643 prefix) and JGI in Walnut Creek 9-911
-- on-campus answered by UC Police.
- All other phones (including
cellular) 911.
When reporting an emergency, it is important to identify yourself and
be as specific as possible. Report the following:
- Your name, phone number
and location, including room and building number or nearest building
if outside.
- The nature and severity
of the emergency -- for example: gas leak, personnel/personal injury,
or spill of hazardous chemicals. In the latter case, give the name of
the chemical and how much.
- Other potential dangers
-- such as the presence of flammable liquids or gases, pressure vessels,
exposure of other persons, structure damage, or suspicious object.
REACTING TO AN EMERGENCY:
-
Remain calm. Don't panic!
- Initiate life saving measures
or First Aid, if required and if properly trained.
- Attend to injured or contaminated
persons and remove them from exposure.
- Call for Emergency Response.
- Alert people in lab to
evacuate, if necessary.
- Close doors to affected
area.
- Have person knowledgeable
of incident and laboratory meet, guide and assist Emergency Personnel.
- Notify your supervisor.
DEFINITION
OF A MAJOR EMERGENCY: A
major emergency is defined as any significant deviation from planned or
expected behavior or course of events that could endanger or adversely
impact the health and safety of persons, property or infrastructure, the
environment., the economic status or reputation of LBNL. A major emergency
could include:
- Earthquakes
- Landslides/Mudslides
- Urban wildland fires
- Winter Storms /Windstorms
- Power/utility failure
- Radioactive or chemical
spill/release
- Explosion/Fire
- Terrorism (i.e.: bomb)
- Domestic/Workplace Violence
- Breach of computer security
