THREATS
Telephone Bomb Threats
Attempt to keep the caller on the line as long as possible and note:
- Time and date of call; age and gender of caller
- Caller’s message
- Distinguishing speech characteristics
- Background noises
- Phone number if caller ID available
- Any other conversation or comments
Then
- Call x7911 or 9-911
- Evacuate yourself and others immediately
- If possible, take personal items such as purses and briefcases with you
Violence, Hostile or Suspicious Persons:
Take precautions to protect yourself and others. Actions depend on the events and may include evacuating, hiding, or locking doors. Call x7911 or 9-911 as soon as possible.
For non-emergency workplace violence issues, call Human Relations at x6747 or x6749.
SUSPICIOUS PACKAGES & MAIL
Inappropriate or unusual labeling
- Do not touch, handle or move a suspicious object
- Excessive postage
- Handwritten or poorly typed addresses
- Misspellings of common words
- Strange return address or no return address
- Incorrect titles or title without a name
- Not addressed to a specific person
- Marked with restrictions, such as “Personal,” “Confidential,” or “Do not x-ray”
- Marked with any threatening language
- Postmarked from a city or state that does not match the return address
Appearance
- Powdery substance felt through or appearing on the package or envelope
- Oily stains, discolorations, or odor
- Lopsided or uneven envelope
- Excessive packaging material such as masking tape, string, etc.
Other suspicious signs
- Excessive weight
- Ticking sound
- Protruding wires or aluminum foil
If Package or Envelope Appears Suspicious, DO NOT OPEN IT
- Set the package or letter down, don’t handle it further
- Warn those nearby
- Immediately call Security x5472
- If possible, wash hands with warm water and soap for at least one minute
