Emergency Preparedness: Emergency Response Guide

FIRE

  • Fire extinguishers should be used only by trained personnel
  • Be ready to evacuate immediately, if the fire cannot be controlled
  • Never enter a room that is filled with smoke, or containing a fire
  • If you use a fire extinguisher, report it to x6015

Fire Categorization

What to do if there is a Small Fire?

  • Alert people nearby
  • Activate nearest fire alarm
  • Call x7911 or 9-911
  • Use extinguisher only if trained
  • Always maintain access to an exit. Do not let fire get between you and the exit
  • Avoid smoke or fumes
  • Notify your Supervisor


What to do if there is a Major Fire?

  • Alert people in the area to evacuate
  • Activate nearest fire alarm
  • Call x7911 or 9-911
  • If safe to do so, close doors to confine fire
  • Evacuate the building
  • DO NOT USE ELEVATORS!
  • Have person knowledgeable of incident and laboratory assist emergency personnel
  • Notify your Supervisor
