BIOLOGICAL SAFETY PROGRAM MANUAL

FORWARD

This Biosafety Manual has been developed by the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Division and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The Manual is part of LBNL's Biosafety Management Program.  This Program was established to accomplish the following goals:

  • protect personnel from exposure to infectious agents
  • prevent environmental contamination
  • provide an environment for high quality research while maintaining a safe work place
  • comply with applicable federal, state and local requirements

The Manual contains LBNL-wide safety guidelines, policies and procedures for the use and manipulation of potentially hazardous biological materials. Although the implementation of these procedures is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI), its success depends largely on the combined efforts of laboratory supervisors and employees. Planning for and implementation of biological safety must be part of every laboratory activity in which biological materials are used.

In general, the handling and manipulation of biological materials (infectious agents, human blood, toxins, recombinant DNA molecules, animals, etc.) requires the use of precautionary measures depending on the material(s) involved. This Manual will help you evaluate risk (risk assessment), establish procedures and practices (primary containment ), and facility requirements (secondary containment) for the control of potential biohazards.

It is imperative that everyone involved or working with these materials seek advice and training when necessary. The EH&S as well as the IBC are available to assist in this endeavor.
