LBNL Regular Shuttle Bus Service

For those who miss the Special Shuttle Bus Service, there is an LBNL off site shuttle bus service that stops a few blocks away from the Durant and Shattuck hotels.  For those staying at the Durant Hotel, you would take the LBNL “Bancroft” bus.  That schedule can be found at:

http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Facilities/Support/Busses/off-site.html

For those staying at the Shattuck Hotel, you would take the LBNL “Hearst” bus, and that schedule is http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Facilities/Support/Busses/off-site-hearst.html

Directions to the Lab

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is located in Berkeley, on the hillside directly above the campus of the University of California at Berkeley.  The address is One Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, California 94720.  For comprehensive directions to the lab, please refer to

http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Transportation.html

Airport Shuttle Recommendation:  Bay Porter
We recommend using Bay Porter, as the laboratory has used them for many years, and their service is very good and timely.  They have shuttles from the San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland airports.  If you share a shuttle with other people (i.e., multiple stops), the rates are lower.  You can make online reservations at http://www.bayporter.com/

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)

Another option for getting to and from the airport is BART (SFO or Oakland to Berkeley takes about 50 to 60 minutes).  You would get off at the Downtown Berkeley BART station.  For those staying at the Durant Hotel, it is approximately a one mile walk from the Downtown Berkeley BART station.  The Shattuck Hotel is only a few blocks away from the station.  The BART weekend hours are not as frequent as the weekdays http://www.bart.gov/stations/schedules/lineSchedules.asp

Parking Information and Special Shuttle Bus Service:

Parking near the Conference location at Bldg. 66 is very limited.  Please contact the Conference Coordinator, Kathleen Brower (KHBrower@lbl.gov), if you will be driving to the lab.  There will be a special shuttle bus service between the conference hotels and the lab.  The shuttle bus will stop at the Durant and Shattuck hotels.

For those who stay at the Durant Hotel, you would take the LBNL “Bancroft” bus.  That schedule can be found at http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Facilities/Support/Busses/off-site.html

For those staying at the Shattuck Hotel, you would take the LBNL “Hearst” bus, and that schedule is http://www.lbl.gov/Workplace/Facilities/Support/Busses/off-site-hearst.html

Security and Bus Passes

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has heightened its security procedures. It is now mandatory for anyone entering Berkeley lab who does not hold a Berkeley Lab badge to show a photo ID and declare your citizenship.

Attendees, there are three ways to handle this:

  1. For those of you staying at local conference hotels, we are providing a shuttle service to and from the laboratory. When you board the bus, you will be asked to show a visitor’s pass. You can obtain a visitor’s pass by faxing us a copy of your photo ID (this can be a driver's license or passport or any DOE badge) along with your citizenship and what local hotel you have booked a reservation, to 510-486-7772. We will then fax you a visitor's pass.
  2. If you are planning to use the regular Lab shuttle from downtown Berkeley, the same procedure as for the conference shuttle bus applies.
  3. Please be advised, we have limited parking available at the Lab. We encourage you to take public transportation whenever possible. If you need to drive, please note that you will be stopped at the security gate and you will need to provide Security with a photo ID and will need to declare your country of citizenship. Your automobile will also be subject to search. As this can cause delays, please allow extra time for this security processing.

Conference Excursion

alcatraz pictureThe afternoon of Wednesday (12pm to 6pm, September 29th, is reserved for the conference excursion. You have the option to join us on a tour to Pier39 in San Francisco, where we will catch the tour boat to the famous island of Alcatraz. The island in the middle of the bay offers spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco.  A guided tour presented by the park rangers will help us explore the island and its famous prison complex.  There will be transportation back to LBNL from the Pier 39 area for those who choose to use it. A map of San Francisco will be provided and information about public transportation will be provided, if you choose to spend the evening in San Francisco.

The tour tickets to Alcatraz are in high demand during the tourist season. If you are planning to join the conference excursion please select Alcatraz Excursion on the registration page. You will be sent an electronic reservation form to sign up for the conference excursion. If you haven’t done so, please sign up for the conference excursion as soon as possible and return the electronic reservation form to ensure your ticket.

Costs: $45/person

Berkeley

Berkeley, home of the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is known for its cultural diversity, art, beautiful parks, innovative businesses, and its open-minded community.

Among the multitude of live performance art featured in Berkeley are some extremely talented and widely known acting groups and theaters, including The Berkeley Repertory Theater.  At UC Berkeley, Cal Performances offers concert and dances at the Zellerbach Auditorium and elsewhere on the UC Campus. Berkeley also features a diverse collection of museums with a plethora of interactive, ethnic, historical, artistic, and children's exhibits.

The Gourmet Ghetto, on Shattuck Avenue between Virginia and Rose Streets, and the new 4th Street shopping/dining area on 4th and Hearst Streets are well worth a visit. Berkeley has an extensive variety of restaurants and no visit to the Bay Area is complete without sampling the variety of fine and diverse foods.

Nearby Attractions

Oakland is only 15 minutes away by BART from the conference site. The Oakland Museum of California is located in downtown Oakland, accessible by BART or automobile. Also in Oakland, the beautifully renovated Art Deco Paramount Theater of the Arts is on 21st St. and Broadway. In Oakland's Jack London Square, Yoshi's is one of the Bay Area's leading jazz clubs, as well as a fine Japanese restaurant.

San Francisco is only 25 minutes away by BART from the conference site. The cable car terminal, Union Square, Geary Street theaters, SF Museum of Modern Art, and the Metreon entertainment and dining complex are a short walk from the Powell Street BART station. The City is also accessible by ferry from Jack London Square.
