About the Berkeley Lab Director Search Process

UC Board of Regents Policy on the PROCEDURE FOR APPOINTMENT OF LABORATORY DIRECTORS

Members of the UC Screening Taskforce

The search process

  • A Search Committee is constituted, composed of Regents, appointed by the Chair of the Regents, and faculty, research scientists and administrators appointed by the President of the University.  The University President convenes the Committee.
  • The Search Committee takes input from the various Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) constituencies and determines those qualifications for a Director that are most important.
  • A Screening Committee is appointed by the UC President composed of knowledgeable scientists and administrators familiar with the University and its management of the Laboratory, the DOE Office of Science Laboratories, LBNL and its scientific work, and the relevant scientific community.
  • The Screening Committee, informed by the qualifications developed by the Search Committee, reviews all applications and nominations and meets to discuss those individuals and others who they put forward for consideration.
  • The Screening Committee forwards individuals to the Search Committee for its consideration.
  • The Search Committee considers the findings of the Screening Committee and may add more individuals for consideration, as it deems appropriate.
  • The Search Committee determines those candidates it wishes to interview, being mindful of the University’s commitment to hiring women and underrepresented minorities.
  • The Search Committee conducts interviews, and the members provide the President with their assessments of the candidates.
  • The Department of Energy is also consulted on the choice of the candidate.
  • Advised by the Search Committee, the University President will make his recommendation to the Regents Oversight Committee on the National Laboratories and, through it, to the Board of Regents for consideration and approval.
