Overview
Unlike other read-only training courses, this training requires you install and run an application called Identity Finder. Identity Finder assists you in locating and removing PII from your workstation.
Lab policy strictly prohibits the storage of PII on your workstation, desktop, laptop, or any media (CD,DVD,USB Stick). PII may only be stored in central business systems (FMS, HRIS).
The majority of people only store PII in central business systems. Identity Finder helps you ensure PII is not stored on your computers.
Once you have removed PII from your computers, don't forget to get JHA credit for SEC 0221: PII Certification.

Background
The loss of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) can lead to identity theft and other undesirable outcomes that can take years to correct. The LBNL definition of PII is:- Social Security Numbers
- Financial Account Numbers
- Drivers License Numbers
- Personally Identifiable Health Information
In order to protect individuals, State and Federal lawmakers have created requirements for protecting PII and reporting the loss of PII. When a PII loss is reported, it often makes national media. For example, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the UC Berkeley incidents both made national media.
Berkeley Lab does not want to be the source of a PII disclosure. You certainly do not want to be the source of a PII disclosure. If you have PII on your workstation, right now is the time to remove it. You are in violation of lab policy and you are putting yourself, other lab employees, and the lab at risk.
