Summary:
You may have seen confidentiality warnings and disclaimers appended to the bottom of emails from people at other institutions.
Berkeley Lab has no requirement for the use of a confidentiality footer, and as a public institution, should not be regularly marking email transmissions as confidential.
The occasional use of specific instructions to the recipient such as "this email is private and is not to be forwarded" may be judiciously utilized. Indiscriminate use of a confidentiality footer is not permitted.
Why:
Excepting some very specific instances (like attorney-client relationships under specific circumstances), the use of broadform confidentiality disclaimers has little or no legal/policy value, and has the potential to create the perception that work at LBL is more sensitive then it really is. If you have furhter questions, contact itpolicy@lbl.gov
