Welcome to the 2012 Computing Sciences Summer Student Program!

Dear Students,

Congratulations and welcome to the 2012 Computing Sciences Summer Student Program. I am Osni Marques, from the Computational Research Division (CRD), and I will be the Computing Sciences Summer Student Program Chair for 2012. We have planned a number of events for you this summer, including tours of the NERSC Supercomputing Center, Berkeley Lab Advanced Light Source, a seminar about the Department of Energy's fellowship opportunities, and a series of talks that will give you an idea of the range of the research being done at Berkeley Lab.

The program will kick-off on June 5, with a pizza lunch and a welcome from Kathy Yelick, Associate Laboratory Director for Computing Sciences, and David Brown, Director of the Computational Research Division. Please check the table below for a schedule of our events, and join our facebook group to meet other students at Berkeley Lab this summer. I am looking forward to meeting you all, and I hope you will find your summer at the Berkeley Lab very stimulating.

Please feel free to contact the following people if you have any questions about the Computing Sciences Summer Student Program or the Berkeley Lab:

Schedule of Events

Berkeley Lab's Computing Sciences organization does research, develops, and deploys new tools and technologies to support research in areas as global climate change, combustion, fusion energy, nanotechnology, biology, and astrophysics. The Thursday brownbag lunch series aims at giving you an idea of the range of that research. For updates and reminders, please contact Teresa Montero to be added to the Google calendar for this series of events. Here is our tentative schedule:

Housing

Unfortunately, the Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences Summer Student Program cannot provide housing for participating students that are flying in for the summer. However, here are some resouces for those looking for a summer sublet or rental in Berkeley. Although we try to assure that the information we present here is correct, please do verify any terms and conditions before moving in.

  • Berkeley Lab Classified Ads - This resource has a "Rentals and Roommates" section that lists housing opportunities by Lab employees.

  • Dormitories are usually large community style housing with shared bathrooms and rooms off a main hallway. Some dorms offer meals in the summer, while others don't. Some dorms are expensive and gorgeous, while others are inexpensive and run down. There is the occasional exception, but on average you get what you pay for.

  • Cooperative Student Housing offers furnished rooms in houses or apartments. Not all co-ops offer food services over the summer.
