PerfSONAR is an open-source monitoring and diagnostic system that boots from a CD, uses a low-cost Linux computer as a host and takes just 10 minutes to configure. Once it’s up, perfSONAR can perform regular tests of a network and provide engineers with the information necessary to find and fix network bottlenecks. The framework was developed through a global collaboration consortium led by the ESnet, GÉANT2, Internet2 and RNP. More>

ESnet, KREON2 and GLORIAD achieved a sustained data transfer rate of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) between the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information. This capability will make 20 percent more data available to the STAR nuclear physics community per year, and close a digital divide between U.S. and Asian physicists. More>
In March and April, Franklin underwent a series of upgrades to improve the I/O capabilities of the system; an additional 110 terabytes of storage was added to the NERSC Global Filesystem (NGF); upgrades to NERSC’s SSH Daemon server improved security and the performance of long-haul transfers of massive datasets. Hispanic Business magazine has honored Cecilia Aragon as one of 25 Women of Vision in 2009. As a staff scientist in the Computational Research Division at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Aragon researches and develops collaborative visual interfaces to foster scientific insight. She is also a founding member of Latinas in Computing and active in diversity and outreach programs at the Lab. More>
