As the newest web interfaces services developer in NERSC's Outreach, Software and Programming Group, Ulugbek "Bek" Baymuradov will be working on NERSC's Information Management (NIM) application and Science Gateways.
Before joining NERSC, Baymuradov and two friends founded a startup called TimeCarrot. "This app would send money to your friends if you wasted too much time on your computer," he says. "That was sort of my crash course in web development and programming."
During his time at Stanford University, Baymuradov worked with the University's Economics department in a consulting capacity to build a web application that administers games in game theory. And on his spare time, he’s developed personal projects, like Notebek.com, which allows users to take notes on YouTube educational content and share them with other students.
"I've always liked problem solving and web development and programming allowed me to do that a lot," says Baymuradov. "You are not only solving user's problem, you can also think of every block of code as a problem statement to be solved. So it's lot of fun either way!"
A native of Uzbekistan, Baymuradov earned an undergraduate degree in Economics from Stanford University in 2010 and completed some graduate studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking for others, running, swimming, and spending entire weekends in a coffee shop with a book.
