Computational Research & Theory Facility: The location of the new facility will be on the hillside of Chu road near the Blackberry Gate entrance to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Currently, the main construction activities are earthwork and foundation work. These activities include drilling, installation of tie backs and soil nails, lagging and shotcrete work. Foundation work will continue through the Summer of 2013. Project completion is scheduled for early 2015.
Solar Energy Research Center is under construction. Steel and concrete superstructure construction will continue through Fall 2013 followed by interior build out. A Fall 2014 occupancy is planned.
Seismic Phase 2:
Bldg. 33 General Purpose Laboratory: Curtain wall installation has been completed but for West soffit overhang. MEP, framing, insulation, drywall and interior painting is underway on all levels. Elevator 2 is completed, and work has commenced on Elevator 1. IT installation underway on all floors. Ceiling grid being installed on floors 3 and 2. CUP utility installation is continuing. Metal deck over CUP steel has been installed.
Bldg. 85 Slope Stabilization: The next phase of the B85 work has commenced with the drilling, rebar and concrete installation for the 5 piers. Concrete grade beam excavation and reinforcing is underway, with concrete installation following shortly. Upcoming work includes the installation of the pier tie-backs in May.
User Test Bed Facility/FLEXLAB: Forming and concrete pours of the rotating test bed through March 2013. Structural steel erection during February, followed by footing and slab completion at the static test beds through May. Wood and metal framing of test bed walls May through June. Rotating test bed structural steel scheduled to be on site in late April.
Old Town Demolition: Critical Decision 0 (CD-0) was approved on October 17, 2012 and $9.9M of funding has been approved for the characterization, deactivation, abatement and demolition of Buildings 5, 16 and 16A down to, but not including, the existing concrete slabs and footings. The demolition of Buildings 4, 7, 7C, 14 and miscellaneous concrete slabs and site remediation is deferred until further funding is available. The demolition of the subject buildings is part of an overall plan to remediate and redevelop the Old Town area of the Lab.
