Construction Projects

What's Happening in the Next Several Weeks:

Computational Research & Theory Facility: The location of the new facility will be on the hillside of Chu road near the Blackberry Gate entrance to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Currently, the main construction activities are earthwork and foundation work. These activities include drilling, installation of tie backs and soil nails, lagging and shotcrete work. Foundation work will continue through the Summer of 2013. Project completion is scheduled for early 2015.

Solar Energy Research Center is under construction. Steel and concrete superstructure construction will continue through Fall 2013 followed by interior build out. A Fall 2014 occupancy is planned.

Seismic Phase 2:
Bldg. 33 General Purpose Laboratory: Work on the exterior window wall system and building roof is nearing completion. The installation of the building elevators has commenced. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and draywall installation activities are underway on all building levels. Large air-handling equipment was installed on the roof. At the Central Utility Plant (CUP), the final elevated deck concrete has been placed. Upcoming activities include backfilling of the CUP North wall and installation of CUP equipment and steel superstructure.
Bldg. 74 Modernization: Bldg. 74 is complete and approx. 70 occupants are in the offices. Lab moves are scheduled to complete by the end of March.
Bldg. 85 Slope Stabilization: Installation of the 5-foot diameter cast-in-drilled-hole concrete piers and grade beams has been completed at the lower level. Tie back installation and testing at the lower level has been completed, and the lower open cut has been backfilled. Utility installation in the lower yard is nearing completion. Upcoming activities include concrete paving and suface painting of the lower level area. Construction in the upper level will commence shortly thereafter and should be completed in June.

User Test Bed Facility/FLEXLAB: Forming and concrete pours of the rotating test bed through March 2013. Structural steel erection during February, followed by footing and slab completion at the static test beds through May. Wood and metal framing of test bed walls May through June. Rotating test bed structural steel scheduled to be on site in late April.

Old Town Demolition: Critical Decision 0 (CD-0) was approved on October 17, 2012 and $9.9M of funding has been approved for the characterization, deactivation, abatement and demolition of Buildings 5, 16 and 16A down to, but not including, the existing concrete slabs and footings. The demolition of Buildings 4, 7, 7C, 14 and miscellaneous concrete slabs and site remediation is deferred until further funding is available. The demolition of the subject buildings is part of an overall plan to remediate and redevelop the Old Town area of the Lab.
