Background/Goals

  • Develop and implement resources and strategies that will increase diversity within the Facilities Division, with an emphasis on underutilized and higher-level positions.
  • Ensure that diversity awareness is integrated into Division activities and decision making.
  • Train and mentor Facilities employees to create viable candidates for higher-level positions.
  • Improve the working environment for Facilities employees.

Accomplishments in 2004

Actions in 2004 are the foundation for the Division’s success in the future:

  • Red Team review identified employee and cultural issues.
  • Facilities Diversity Committee member on all selection committees.
  • Peer Group Review of the working environment and processes in the transportation and receiving unit.
  • New management for custodial group.
  • Increasing the visibility of the Facilities Division in the local community and schools.

Action Items for 2005

Minority Recruitment and Hiring

  • Work with the Workforce Diversity Office to identify target areas where there exist underutilization and potential for hiring this year.
    • Inform hiring managers of underutilization when positions are posted.
    • Track diversity of the total pool of candidates for targeted positions.
    • Increase advertising to minority job posting services.
  • Increase the visibility of the Facilities Division in the local community and schools; LBNL Facilities should be viewed as an employer of choice.
    • Continue to support the Center for Science and Engineering Education (CSEE) by attending career days at local schools.
    • Continue to represent LBNL at local community activities.

Mentoring and Skill Development

Develop training and mentoring programs for Facilities managers and supervisors.

  • Revise the Facilities Liaison pilot program (single point of contact for scientific divisions)
    • Managers have currently been assigned as liaison to individual divisions.
    • Explore possibility of assigning liaisons to the ALDs.
  • Develop process for expanded training for new supervisors.
  • Develop mentoring and training program for all employees.
  • Working with the Facilities Diversity Committee, develop an internship program within Facilities that will allow employees to work part-time with other crafts and trades.

Improving Work Environment

  • Target custodial unit for intervention to assess work climate, quality of leadership, and interpersonal relationship issues.
  • Continue process of eliminating disparities and inappropriate behavior in the workplace.
