Educator Experiences: Karen Kelly

"I am so proud and excited to have been involved with a summer research project at Eddy Rubin's Lab at Berkeley Lab's Genomics Division. The benefits that this experience will bring to my students is many. While working in Dr. Rubin's lab, I was involved with cutting edge genetic research that revealed that there are truly gems to be found in our "junk DNA" My research project involved integrating ideas in bioinformatics, evolution, molecular biology, and transgenic mice into a very clever method of genetic discovery. I feel so proud to be involved with such a great idea and to be able to work with such an awesome team of scientists. Experiences like this renew my passion for educating this new up-and-coming generation as to how genetic information will surely impact their lives. My brand new batch of students may not know it yet, but they will discover that they are lucky to have me as their biology teacher."
