Eight precious metals are identified and provided (contingent upon available stock) for use in DOE projects. They are Gold, Silver, and the Platinum Group metals: platinum, rhodium, palladium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium. Their properties of superior resistance to corrosion and oxidation make them ideal for experiments and investigations of materials undertaken by Berkeley Lab researchers, who can request project-specific amounts from DOE's Business Center for Precious Metals Sales and Recovery. All requests for metal are placed by the Lab's single designated buyer, Edward Anderson, who is a sourcing expert for special forming or processing of metals that cannot be accomplished on site by Daniel Lee (EG) or James Woo (MS). Precious Metals are subject to exceptional security and lifecycle management, including annual inventories and spot audits. For information, contact the Precious Metals Control Officer, Carol Earls.
