~ Jeffrey's Corner ~

These past summer weeks haven’t brought us as much sunshine as we would like, but hopefully you are enjoying the milder weather and having fun with friends and family. Now that we are in our new home, it’s great to see all the faces we usually only meet over the phone or at the occasional meeting. Our “housewarming” pizza party was a great way to meet and greet one another while appreciating our new space.

Take an opportunity to explore the neighborhood and all that it has to offer with its diverse restaurants, shopping and even a few parks.

As the summer winds down, play safe and have fun!

~ Move Update ~

We Have Arrived!

Hollis...and we couldn't be happier in our new home on Hollis Street! Thank you for making the move a success. Each and every one of you contributed to a safe and efficient move, with no injuries!

We are settling in, getting to know one another in a new way, with green leaves over our heads, white noise muffling our busyness, meeting each other in the kitchen for coffee, and discovering the charm and conveniences of our new neighborhood.

A whole new way of working is emerging and people are using their feet more than their phones to give and get information they need from fellow colleagues. What a great way to get some exercise!

You may have noticed the newly posted refrigerator policy, please mark your perishable items with the date using the blue tape provided on the kitchen counter, and please remember to recycle using the receptacle next to the wet garbage container - also in the kitchen.

Hollis Street will be having a surprise evacuation drill over the next few weeks, so refresh your knowledge of the route and assembly area.

Save the Date: Hollis Street Tenants Appreciation Lunch on Wednesday, September 14 from 12-1:30.

~ F$M Project Update ~

F$M

The Financial Systems Modernization (F$M) — Phase I (analysis, process re-engineering and business requirements) — project has been progressing well and is on schedule. This was made possible with the continued support from the Lab and divisional management, active participation and contribution from project managers/PIs, scientists, engineers, business managers, OCFO process owners, resource analysts, the information systems support group and other financial information consumers/users.

The following significant tasks have been completed, to date:

  • ‘As-Is’ review of current business processes, system set-ups and current state analysis
  • Requirements and issues; pain points gathering through workshops and user surveys, and identifying transformation opportunities
  • High-level targets for improvement and recommendations
  • ‘Draft’ process flows and use cases (processes/functionality not supported by the delivered PeopleSoft) for the proposed future state

~ A Fish Story ~

Derrol Hammer of our Procurement Department vacationed in Wyoming and Idaho this summer and while enjoying the great outdoors, accomplished something quite remarkable. He caught and released seven different species of trout, including an officially recognized Wyoming Cutt-Slam consisting of all four Wyoming native cutthroat trout — Yellowstone Cutthroat, Snake River Cutthroat, Colorado River Cutthroat and Bonneville Cutthroat. The Wyoming Cutt-Slam program was designed to encourage anglers to learn more about Wyoming’s cutthroat sub-species and develop more appreciation and support of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s cutthroat management program and offers a certificate of completion for catching the four sub-species in their native range in Wyoming.

And, that’s no fish story!

Procurement News

Purchase Order Closeout

A team of 10-12 subcontractors from CE2 Corporation will be closing out subcontracts in the Aspen conference room between August 29th and September 30th. Their objective is to close as many expired subcontracts as possible thru year-end so that excess liens can be de-obligated. Their work will require them to contact people within the Division who manage subcontracts, as well as those in Accounts Payable and Procurement. In the first weeks they will need our help to become acclimated to the environment, just as we have since the move. For questions regarding the closeout, please contact David Chen (x4506).

Welcome New Employees!

OCFO Welcomes You!

Safety Corner

Remember! During year end close, talk to your Supervisor about your workload, and stay safe!

Do you have your “GO” kit?

Sure the summer is (usually) sunny and warm, but what if we have an emergency while it’s raining or cold? Are you prepared? What would you want to keep with you if you weren't able to get back into your building for an hour or more? The best preparation is a little pre-planning. Make a “GO” kit that you can grab as you leave a building in the event of an emergency. Things to include are: snacks, warm clothing, comfortable walking/standing shoes, tissues, etc. For a complete list of recommendations, see pages 26-27 in the Emergency Preparedness Guide. Emergency preparedness is something we all can do!

OCFO Home Safety Video

If a kid can do it, you can do it!

In May, the EHS Safety Committee sponsored a safety video contest in which the OCFO submitted an entry entitled “If a Kid Can Do It, You Can Do It!”. While we didn't win the contest, we are very proud of the effort of Maria Atkinson and Phil Weiss who produced the video. We also recognize and thank the Fernandez, Atkinson and Weiss families for participating as the “on screen” talent for this great video about how you can be safe at home. To see the video, and all of the videos entered in the contest, click HERE. Scroll down the list to the “Home Safety with OCFO” listing and play. Remember: “Be Safe”!

Diversity Corner

Just as science reveals nature’s diversity, science organizations reveal their own nature by the diversity and inclusion they foster.

At LBNL, diversity of people and thought is part of our unique social fabric and a key to our research success. It is also a daily and personal commitment – and an expectation. Each employee has a role to play. Every employee has a responsibility to act.

We believe in the Lab’s mission to share the benefits of scientific discovery with the world. We also respect the differences in our workplace community. In doing so, our actions are guided by the following principles:

  • Listen to others and encourage collaboration. We are stronger as a group when our uniqueness is valued.
  • Reach out if you see someone confused or in need. We are concerned about others.
  • Treat others with respect. We believe in fairness for all.

These are the newly approved guiding principles for us to follow here at the Lab and in our daily lives. The Diversity Council is always looking for ways to include and value everyone more, so if you have a speaker you would like to hear, or ideas to help promote diversity and inclusion at the Lab, please send your suggestions to Cari Lewis (x2371).
