Assess
A licensing staff member, sometimes in conjunction with a patent attorney, will contact the inventors or software developers to assess the technology and determine whether the Lab should seek patent protection or, with respect to software, determine how best to distribute it outside of the Lab. Issues that will be considered are:
- How the technology relates to the state of the art in its field
- The technology’s stage of development
- Potential commercial applications
- Level of interest from industry
