WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
AND DO
Keep a record of your research by regularly using a lab notebook.
It can prove critical for the protection of your intellectual property.
LAB NOTEBOOK GUIDELINES
- Use consecutive pages in a standard lab book that has permanent
pages
- Use ink, not pencil
- Date entries and identify subject matter
- Include and explain any relevant formulae, sketches, photos,
diagrams, etc.
- Don't change entries - make a new entry rather than erasing
- Periodically have someone look over your entries and witness
by adding their signature and date. Witnessing is particularly
key for first descriptions of inventions.
