Combinatorial Synthesis

Symyx Technologies is applying combinatorial chemistry technology exclusively licensed from Berkeley Lab for the rapid discovery of new materials for the electronics and chemical industries in a cost-effective manner. These materials include catalysts, polymers, and electronic materials. Symyx creates libraries of thousands of combinations of microscale quantities of starting materials, and then employs sophisticated parallel processing and high throughput analysis to identify the most promising compounds. Symyx scientists are able to synthesize materials and examine them for desired properties up to 100,000 times faster than with conventional "small-batch" procedures. Symyx expects that its ability to generate and analyze millions of inorganic, organic, and organometallic compounds will allow the company not only to increase dramatically the rate of new materials discovery, but to make breakthroughs not possible using traditional approaches.
