INDUSTRY-LAB RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Federal Collaborative Research Programs

Some of the most innovative technology transfer at Berkeley Lab today involves collaborative projects with industry. In collaborative research arrangements, DOE and industry jointly sponsor a research project. Costs, personnel, facilities, equipment, or research capabilities may be shared for mutual benefit. This provides industry with an excellent way to leverage their research activities. If you are interested in collaborative research, please contact Pam Seidenman at PSSeidenman@lbl.gov or at 510-486-6461.

Some federally sponsored industry-Lab research programs:

Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR)/ STTR

SBIR is a highly competitive program that encourages small business to utilize or develop their technological potential and provides incentive to profit from the commercialization of new technologies. These grants are used to support the development of new technologies that have potential to be successful commercial products or processes. Many companies partner or subcontract with a National Lab to conduct part of the research.

Advanced Technology Program (ATP)

ATP funds high-risk, high payoff projects from all technology areas.

Sponsored Research (Work For Others)

A company may sponsor Berkeley Lab scientists to conduct research on a specified issue if there are researchers with the appropriate capabilities and interest in the project. The unique equipment and specialized staff expertise at Berkeley Lab provide research opportunities that may not be available anywhere else. To explore research topics contact Pam Seidenman at PSSeidenman@lbl.gov or at 510-486-6461, and to discuss contractual issues contact Jeff Weiner at Jeff_Weiner@lbl.gov or 510-486-7143.

Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention Program (IPP)

Partnership opportunities with scientists from the former Soviet Union defense establishment are periodically available to Berkeley Lab researchers and a U.S. industrial partner. The DOE funds the work at the Lab and in the former Soviet Union. The industrial partner must make an in-kind contribution equal to the DOE funding. Projects are up to 2 years and $1M with $700,000 going to researchers in the former Soviet Union.

University of California Discovery Grant

These state grants aim to strengthen and expand California's economy through jointly sponsored industry-university research partnerships. Up to $60 million/year from the state, industry, and university/lab funds research in biotechnology, communications and networking, digital media, innovation, information technology for life sciences, microelectronics, electronics, manufacturing, and new materials.

Businesses having relevant R&D operations in California or with a relevant R&D alliance with a firm in California are eligible. See more on the UC Discovery Grants.

User Facilities

Berkeley Lab has some facilities that are available to industry. This allows industry and university partners to conduct research at the lab's unique experimental facilities. To arrange to use one of these facilities, please contact the user facility below with which you would like to work.

Advanced Light Source (ALS)
Molecular Foundry (a nanostructures user facility)
National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)
National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM)
The Joint Genome Institute (JGI)
88-Inch Cyclotron

Other User Facilities

  • Bidirectional Radiometric Scanner
  • Energy Efficient Fixtures Laboratory
  • Environmental Chamber
  • High Aspect Ratio-Microfabrication Laboratory (LIGA)
  • Infrared Thermography Laboratory
  • Low Background Counting Facility
  • MoWitt: Mobile Window Thermal Test Facility
  • Sky Simulator for Architectural Daylighting Design

Please contact Pam Seidenman at PSSeidenman@lbl.gov or at 510-486-6461 if you are interested in using one of the facilities listed above.
