Safety: Who is at Highest Risk for H1N1 and the Seasonal Flu?

Everyone should use basic flu-prevention tactics, such as frequent hand washing and covering nose or mouth when sneezing or coughing. But some people are more susceptible to the complications of flu. These groups include children under five years old (particularly under age two), adults age 65 and older, pregnant women, and those with asthma, chronic lung and heart disease, disorders of the blood, liver and kidneys, and weakened immune systems due to other diseases or medications. High-risk individuals should check in with their healthcare provider and watch for emergency warning signs, such as difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the abdomen, sudden dizziness or confusion, and severe or persistent vomiting. Call Health Services (x6266) if experiencing these symptoms at work. Updates to the Alameda County Public Health Department vaccination schedule are posted here.
