At the experiment station, researchers make observations by
using the synchrotron light (photons) to produce small changes in their
samples, while a variety of instruments record the results. Computers help
convert the instruments' readings into images, graphs, or even three-dimensional
models, making new information available for advancing science and technology. |

As a national user facility, the ALS is available to researchers
from universities, industry, and government laboratories. Each year, over
100 scientists from around the world come to the ALS to conduct experiments.
The photograph above shows a research team from Western Michigan University
setting up their experiment chamber at the ALS beamline for atomic and molecular
physics. |
