Minutes of the Physics Division ES&H Committee

Attendees:  K. Hardy, T. Spadafora, F. Rosado, C. Thompson, C. Bebek, J. Kadyk, M. Kotowski, R. Madaras

Self-Assessment

-         Validation

o       Important to have some type of proof, paper trail, etc.

o       Survey, questionnaire, and interviews are considered to be of more substance to us because of the feedback we get.

-         Report (Handout)

o       Review of report

o       Grading was green (meets or exceeds requirements)

o       HEAR Database is not up to date

o       K. Hardy has updates and changes on paper but they have not been put on into the database

-         Ergonomics

o       Grading was green

o       Hopefully all can be trained this year

-         Training

o       Yellow grading for training completion (Needs improvement)

o       Lots of people have been seen working in/on open electronics and are not trained - NOT GOOD

o       Intake procedures for new or returned employees are not consistent or reliable

o       Documentation problems seem to be abundant

o       Need to come up with corrective actions for yellow graded items

o       Guidelines need to be created new people and those who have to take classes or require some training

o       Ongoing reminders should be set up

o       Guidelines need to be outlined for people who use Physics Machine Shop

o       This year our own (Physics) JHQ will be put on the Web

o       Cryogenics class to be offered soon

o       M. Kotowski is willing to give classes on any specific safety issues

 

Additional Topics

-         Minutes from safety meetings

o       Clear and easy to understand

o       Discretion can be used when publishing minutes in the Web

o       Leave names/details out; just mention that there was a brief discussion

-         Safety inspections

o       Scheduled for Mondays at 11:00am

-         Suggestions for corrective actions for Self-Assessment Review

-         Look at Physics Safety website and give suggestions.  What would you like to see?  What DON'T you want to see?  Everyone encouraged to look at Earth Sciences, Material Sciences, and EETD websites for ideas.
