Minutes of the Physics Division ES&H Committee
May 12, 2003
Safety Inspections
- One inspection remaining: Bldg 51 Rm 16 & 14; Monday, 05/19, @ 10:30am (Reminders will be sent out)
- Bldg 60 (No need to inspect)
- Shop inspection (50-6035); Report (Handout) results of inspection. "Wax Lube" violation is a Lab-wide problem, seen in many shops. Otherwise, shop is in excellent condition.
MESH Review
- Postponed to August. Lots of other issues that need attention. Our good record allowed us to postpone.
Integrated Functional Appraisal (IFA)
- Needs some updating of MESH Database
- Otherwise, things look good and we will get a report soon.
Self-Assessment Accreditation Team
- Very impressed with safety program
- Wanted to know processes and successes
- Liked our early involvement in safety
- Asked a series of questions and looked at a number of documents
Chemical Inventory
· New software/database
· Log on with regular ID and password
· Would anyone be interested in using this? Steve Dardin
· Problems - People don't barcode or notify chemical dept. Storage: Not storing in secondary containers
· Lots of chemicals idly sitting, not being used.
Coordinator's Meeting
- HEPA vacuum: If you have one of these, notify Lab to have them registered.
- Ergo concerns: There may not be enough money for ergo equipment. Creating an allowance of $1,000 per employee. Very important since there is a lot of relocating going on. We will continue to do evaluations. Observe co-workers to see their typing, sitting, working practices. Do they practice good ergo? Microscopes are also a concern.
Guidelines for "Leaders"
- Someone in charge of those working in lab other than supervisor.
- Need to develop a statement for this designation to put on P2R.
Accidents
- Number of accidents around the Lab (trips and falls).
- Be aware of yourself and your surroundings
