AppleTalk Phaseout at Berkeley Lab

AppleTalk Phaseout Project Description

IT will end support for IPX/DECnet/Appletalk, three old legacy network protocols still in use at Berkeley Lab, on November 8, 2005. This is long after the companies who invented them have stopped using them. Berkeley Lab follows SLAC, Stanford University, UC Berkeley and many other institutions that have transitioned out of these old technologies several years ago. Phasing out these legacy protocols will decrease desktop support costs, and increase IT's flexibility in selecting networking infrastructure equipment in the future.

The IT Division is currently gathering statistics on where AppleTalk is being routed, and who is most likely to be impacted when this action is taken.

How will this affect you?

AppleTalk traffic on the local subnet for file servers and printers will not be effected by this change.  Your chooser will continue to show devices located in the same IP subnet as your Mac.

AppleTalk zones will not appear in the Chooser. You will not be able to browse AppleTalk file sharing and printing services on remote subnets. Connecting to computers and printers on remote subnets will require TCP/IP. Detailed instructions for TCP/IP connections are available in the How-To Documents section.

See the Printers section of the How-To Documents page.

When AppleTalk routing is turned off on December 31, 2005, the following services will be impacted:

Services Affected

  • File Sharing through Apple file share
    • For example, access to a Filemaker-Pro Database
  • Printer Support for Apple protocol printers attached to the network

Services Not Affected

  • Email or Calendar access
  • Web Access
  • All TCP/IP Services
