IT Maps the Future of Windows Workstations at Berkeley Lab:
Migration of NT4 Users to Active Directory

The IT Division has been migrating users from a decade old Windows Domain that is no longer supported by Microsoft. Our goal is to conclude this effort by the end of August 2005.

This effort was first reported in the August 2003 issue of Computing News.

As reported in the February edition of Computing News, Microsoft officially ended support for NT4.

We have approximately 120 active NT4 accounts to migrate. While we are making every attempt to contact remaining NT4 domain users, if you have any questions about the process (or need help), call the Help Desk at x4357.

With the help of Dan Pulsifer in the Engineering Division, several web sites have helped us organize and control the effort. Go here to review remaining NT4 domain accounts.

Membership in the new domain has grown as the migration activity has gained momentum. (If you login into “LBL” when you use your computer, you are a member. Go here to review the current Windows AD accounts.

Benefits of domain membership:

  • Decentralized control over subgroups (referred to as Organization Units) for activities such as software deployment, desktop security,  file and print services, and other user specific needs
  • IT Help Desk support for account management (creation, termination, password resets, for example)
  • Automatic patch deployment and verification via a centrally maintained service implemented at the OU Level
  • Automatic deployment of workstation security templates implemented at the OU level
