IT Updates: Automatic Inventory Collection

The IT Division continues to work on an electronic inventory data collection process.  IT will track hardware and software installed on a computer and associate this information with related data in the Lab’s property system.

Most IT Division computers have had the property tag number (DOE number) entered by users at login (a one-time occurrence), and electronically recorded in the computer.  Starting next week, scripts will be run to collect hardware and software information, with the ability to relate this information to the DOE number previously recorded.  This script runs silently and does not require user intervention. Once the pilot project has been completed, all Windows computers in Operations will be added. The tool for collecting this information may change as IT refines the process. Automatic data collection makes the process much less time consuming—IT staff no longer need to manually verify every DOE tag.
