Lab to Share Linux Cluster Expertise at Community College Conference
Greg Kurtzer of ITSD’s UNIX Services Group will be among the presenters at a national high-perfomance computing conference to be held June 9, 2004, at Contra Costa College in San Pablo. The one-day conference will feature HPC-related workshops and presentations by academic and industry representatives. The conference, which will also feature presenters from LLNL and SLAC, will be preceded by a two-day, limited-enrollment workshop on parallel computing. The workshop is being held on June 7-8 and will include a computational science overview, an introduction to parallel programming, building a cluster and working with the message passing interface (MPI). The workshop is targeted towards community college computer science or information technology faculty, although others may apply for admission as well. The workshop will be limited to 30 participants. According to ITSD’s Charlie Verboom, who will be moderating one of the sessions, both the workshop and conference are good resources for Lab groups who have hired summer students to help with computing projects or for staff members who have an interest in learning more about HPC at an introductory level. For example, the three students participating in this year’s ITSD Faculty and Student Team (a CSEE sponsored program) will be attending. The registration deadline is Friday, May 28. Read more about the workshop and conference, including how to register. The National Center is a consortium of four community colleges located in California, Hawaii, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The goal is to train HPC technicians at the community college level. Berkeley Lab has been working for several years with Bay Area community colleges to help develop curricula, train instructors and provide hands-on internships for students. |
