  LBNL Goes Google

The Berkeley Lab internal search page, http://search.lbl.gov/, will soon be based exclusively on the Google search appliance.

After an evaluation of both search engines, ITSD determined that Google is considerably more powerful and precise than the current UltraSeek Lab search engine, which will be phased out over the next several months.

Currently, both engines are working, and users can start using Google at any time via http://search.lbl.gov/. When the transition phase is complete, the Google engine will completely replace the UltraSeek search engine.

On the new search page users can select site-specific searches from a drop-down menu that lists the various divisions at the Lab. Otherwise, the main Google search box will look in all of the Lab's divisions for results.

Google does "Automatic "and" Queries", so that, by default, Google returns only pages that include ALL of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms. Keep in mind that the order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results. To restrict a search further, just include more terms.

For example, to look for documents including both the terms supernova and galaxy simply type: supernova galaxy.

Another difference between UltraSeek and Google is in the treatment of stem" and "wildcard" searches -- Google will search only for the exact words that you enter into the search box. For example, searching for airlin" or "airlin*" will not yield "airline" or "airlines." If in doubt, try both forms, for example: "airline" and "airlines."
