  Password Registration Process Simplified

In an effort to help new employess get started faster using Lab services like email and calendar, ITSD and the Site Access Office have collaborated to make the assignment of "LDAP" passwords a smoother process. Starting Wednesday, February 18, new employees who report to the site access office, in Building 65A, to get their LBNL badges will also be assigned a temporary LDAP password.

By assigning the password at this point in the process, ITSD will no longer have to track down new employees, verify their identity, and issue a password. In addition, cyber security will be enhanced because physical presence ensures that the password is only provided to the person for whom it is intended. A dedicated workstation in the lobby of 65A will allow employees, if they choose, to change the temporary password to a permanent one before they leave.

LDAP is the primary authentication method used by many Lab business and infrastructure systems, such as the employee self-help page, the LETS payment system, and the EHS training site, as well as email and calendar applications. Any employee who will be at the Lab for longer than 30 days is eligible for an LDAP password.

From now on, new employees will be given a flyer which includes instructions on how to change the LDAP password, guidance on appropriate use of Lab computers, and on other services and systems which they may need. New employees are advised to ask their supervisor for guidance on the applicability of additional services, such as the centrally provided Unix, Novell, Windows Domain or PPP remote access accounts, for example.

Valerie Quigley (x7032), Emergency Preparedness/Site Access Program Manager, and Josie Galvan (x2322), Team Lead for the ITSD Help Desk, are working together to ensure a smooth transition.
