Remote Access to Berkeley Lab Information Systems (BLIS)

The Berkeley Laboratory Information Systems (BLIS) Enterprise Portal is now available via remote access.

BLIS, a multi-year project, is aimed at providing LBNL users with a “personalized information cockpit” from which they can navigate and gain access to the management information they need with a few keystrokes. Phase one of the BLIS project was launched in January 2003 in order to demonstrate the capabilities and potential of the system. The pilot went live on December 15, 2003 with a limited subset of data. Phase two of the project was launched in March, and has been focused on:

  • Adding new features to the BLIS Enterprise Portal. Examples are remote access capability, a bookmarks channel, and a channel for delivering general announcements to the Lab.

  • Sourcing additional data from transactional systems. Included are financial liens, budget data from JANUS and effort data from the Labor Distribution System.

  • Offering additional “reports” on the data sourced from transactional systems during the pilot phase and the new data set to be sourced in Phase two.

When fully implemented, BLIS will provide scientific and operations staff with easy access to information from a wide range of Lab transactional systems, with the delivered information tailored and appropriate for each end user. BLIS will allow both standardized and ad-hoc reporting to many levels of science and operations management. The system will be proactive in that it will provide information that managers and supervisors “should” know, such as their staff turnover rate, project financial status, customer satisfaction level, etc. Additionally, alerts will be published to ensure full compliance with policies and procedures. By integrating data sourced from various enterprise transactional applications, BLIS will provide stronger validation and enforce accountability.

For those interested in learning more about BLIS, there is good news: the length of time required for BLIS basic training has been reduced from three hours to one hour.
