Lab to Reduce Number of Email Servers

LBNL needs to dramatically reduce the number of email servers operating at the Lab in order to reduce the security risks associated with these machines. Currently, there are more than 290 email servers, and many of these are inactive -- only 25 of the servers receive more than 5,000 messages/month.

Lab Director Charles Shank has instructed ITSD to reduce the number of Lab email servers to no more than 25. By May 15, ITSD will determine which email servers will remain, while the others will be converted or shut down. Each of the remaining servers will go through a certification process to ensure that cybersecurity (virus and spam) measures are in place. ITSD will review applications of those users/departments that want to maintain an email server.

ITSD has contacted users/departments currently operating an email server, informing them of the various options available. These options are defined and described in detail along with other information about the project at: https://www.lbl.gov/ITSD/emailservers/.
